We are glad you are checking us out! We’re guessing you probably want to know a little bit about what you’re getting yourself into before showing up on Sunday. While you probably won’t find the answers to all your questions here, we hope you’ll get a taste of what we’re about. The best way to find out more is to visit us on Sunday and see for yourself.
Tell me more about First Presbyterian.
We are a historic, Presbyterian, evangelical church in the heart of Harrisonburg, Virginia. When you visit, you’ll encounter a welcoming group of people who care for each other, our community, and our world. We love Jesus, and we love only because he first loved us. We’re not perfect, but we are seeking more and more to be like the Savior we trust.
When and where do you meet?
We meet for worship on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. In between, we have numerous Sunday school classes for children and adults. We are located in historic downtown Harrisonburg, on the northwest corner of Court Square (see the map below for our location and parking locations).
What can I expect at your worship services?
We have two distinct worship services, one at 9:00 a.m. and another at 11:15 a.m. The 9:00 a.m. worship service includes modern praise songs with drums, guitars, and multimedia. The 11:15 a.m. service is more liturgical, with elements such as a choir and hymns accompanied by our magnificent pipe organ. At both services, the word is preached. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of each month and at several special services.
What about my kids?
We have Sunday school options for children, and during each service, we have nursery available. During the 9:00 a.m. service, children’s church is offered for younger children, but we enthusiastically welcome children into all aspects of our worship services. We believe the church should be intergenerational in its ministry, and we value what people of all ages bring to the church
I’m in college, and I need a ride. What should I do?
What should I wear?
We’re flexible. Some come in jeans, others in suits and ties. It really doesn’t matter to us. We’re simply glad to have you join us to learn more about the God we serve.
How else can I get involved?
As you can see from our website, we are involved in many ministries in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, and even across the globe. If you’d like to get connected to one of those ministries, please contact us.
