First Presbyterian Church has hired Betsy Dishman as its new Director of Children and Family Ministries, and she begins work in November.
Betsy has served area churches for more than 25 years, working in various ministry areas, including children, youth and music. She spent the last eight years serving as Director of Music and Children’s Ministries at a Presbyterian church in Charlottesville. Betsy also served in various positions of leadership and planning for conferences at Massanetta Springs Camp and Conference Center. Betsy also has served in many capacities with GenOn Ministries, an inter-denominational non-profit that seeks to “equip Christian communities for discipleship through intergenerational relationships.” Her roles have included volunteer training leader, curriculum and resource writer and training coordinator.
Search committee members were impressed with Betsy’s breadth of experience in church ministry and program development. They also were impressed with her leadership abilities, vision, faith, enthusiasm and obvious love of Jesus.
Betsy is a native of Richmond. She is a JMU graduate. She and her husband Keith live in Fishersville, and they have two young-adult sons, Zach and Jacob.
Betsy will begin her ministry here on Nov. 13.
The search committee has been meetings since mid-July, conducting a national search for this position. “Betsy rose to the top,” said Mike Hendricksen, the committee’s chairman. Other members of the committee included Caitlin Berkey, Mary Sease, Pam Simmons and ex-officio member Scott Thayer, an associate pastor at First Presbyterian.
