Hey Dukes! We’re glad to welcome freshmen and returning students to Harrisonburg and our community. We know that JMU encourages you to “Be the Change,” and we want to help you do just that.
First Presbyterian Church, located in the heart of downtown Harrisonburg, serves the community in a variety of ways. We’d love to partner with you in being the change. Here are three ways you can do that with us.
We hold a Soup Kitchen every Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Volunteers are welcome to come earlier in the afternoon to cook and set up tables or during the soup kitchen to serve and visit with our guests. Contact Mary Scott.
This after-school club serves immigrant and refugee students ages 11-14 (grades 6 to 8) who are learning English. You will work with others to build relationships with students, help with homework and have a time for recess and games. (You do not have to know another language.) EPIC meets at Thomas Harrison Middle School on Mondays from 3:15 p.m. to 5:10pm. The first meeting for this coming school year is September 18th. For information contact Amy Werner. The video below includes one of our volunteer’s experiences with EPIC.
Harrisonburg’s annual emergency shelter rotates to various locations during the winter. We host the shelter three times during the cold season. Volunteers will help run the shelter during its stay at the church. Dates are yet to be announced, but you can contact Mary Scott to find out more or get on our volunteer list.
If you have questions on any of these community-service opportunities, contact Scott Thayer.
