First Presbyterian is starting a new project to help the growing number of refugee and immigrant students as they earn English in their new community.

The new program, called EPIC (short for Educational Partnership Initiative in our Community), is aimed at helping newcomers learn English in a fun after-school program at Thomas Harrison Middle School. EPIC will meet Mondays from 3 to 5 p.m. starting March 13. It will run for eight weeks.

Volunteers are needed, and no experience teaching English is necessary. The main goal: to build relationships within our community.

The need is clear: Students in Harrisonburg schools speak more than 50 languages and were born in more than 50 different countries.
